Two people were killed when a section of the stage for Madonna’s concert at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseilles, France, collapsed during construction (July 16).

Charles Criscenzo, 54, and Charles Prow, 23, were killed when one of several cranes allegedly failed in the process of lifting putting the stage roof in place for a planned concert today. Scores of other workers were injured, and news reports stated at least one person was also critically injured. A government investigation into the cause of the tragedy is underway. The concert was cancelled as a result of the massive destruction.

The incident draws attention once again to the dangers---and some times reckless management---of concert production. Our friends over at Backstage.com do a good job of boldly speaking out on production safety issues and tracking concert production incidents around the world.

Live Nation, the promoter of the Madonna tour, was also in charge of production for the Marseilles concert.
