Girl Talk Comes To The University Of Kentucky: Roll The Dice

The University of Kentucky’s student activity board has invited the notorious deejay Girl Talk (Gregg Gillis) to Lexington to perform on campus tonight.

Mr. Gillis is known for his mayhem marketing concerts where he intentionally creates crowd chaos--crowd crazes, crowd crushing, etc. Drugs consumption by his audiences appear to be welcome, too, if not encouraged.

To date, nobody has been critically injured at a Girl Talk gig. But, if Mr. Gillis continues to perform in his signature reckless manner, his concert luck could change.

The deejay’s usual modus operandi is to call concertgoers to the stage to dance during his concert. Stages have collapsed and his concerts have been halted by public safety authorities in and outside of the US. Or Mr. Gillis may join the crowd via crowd surfing (or allow his audience to crowd surf). Crowd surfing is one of the most dangerous concert crowd activities known. Thousands of concertgoers have been injured by those who take part in the high risk activity. Crowd surfers have also died.

Still, all these red flags are apparently not stopping the university from rolling the dice and hoping for the best. According to The Kentucky Kernel, the university student newspaper, extra campus police will be on hand to inspect bags and purses for drugs, etc. (is this legal without probable cause or a search warrant?), there will be extra volunteers for the concert (i.e. untrained students who volunteer as ushers or security guards to get into the concert for free), and a steel front of stage barrier. But, That is not all.

A spokesperson for the student activities board told The Kernel that all precautions have been taken. That statement would have some truth to it if the National Fire Protection Association’s Life Safety Code 101 series of crowd safety standards were being adhered to, but they are not.

In the end, this University of Kentucky concert will be similar to many other Girl Talk campus gigs. Roll the dice.
