Crowdsafe.com folks don’t know what great city the International Olympic Committee will pick to host the 2016 Olympics. The committee is currently huddled in Copenhagen listening to competitors—-Madrid, Tokyo, Chicago and Rio de Janeiro—-give it their best shot.
When it comes to weighing in on the best choice from the vantage point of crowd safety, the alleged current front runner, Chicago, seems like a bad choice---its wonderful amenities, people and architecture aside.
Since the 2003 E2 nightclub disaster---some would say since the 1968 Democratic National Convention---the Windy City, has had nothing but problems handling crowds. Gosh, the city’s top venue, can’t even manage a U2 concert without crowd safety missteps, as last month’s opening gig proved at Soldier Field.
Being the most corrupt big city in America likely has something to do with Chicago’s ongoing crowd problems. But, that aside, Chicago officials have never really have a crowd safety ethic. Imagine what type of job Chicago and its contractors will do faced with an Olympic challenge.
Picking the city lucky enough to host this historic and monumental athletic event won’t be known for a few days. Nevertheless, Crowdsafe folks are cheering for their favorite: Rio de Janeiro.
It’s time for South America to have its moment to shine.
