{ War Memorial }

Sun Jan 25 08:20:22 CST 1998
Where: Rochester, NY
When: 11/12/1997
Stage: indoors

I have seen Phish 47 times, at indoor and outdoor venues all over the country, but the security at this venue was perhaps the worst I have ever experienced! Before the show, 1000s of people were gathered in the street, waiting for the door to open. I say door in the singular, because there was only one entrance to the venue. I even asked the security if there were other entrances, but they were extremely rude. They said that there were also entrances on the side, but they weren't open. The entrance was blocked off by barricades, which had two openings in them, approximately 5 feet wide. 1000s of fans (venue capacity = 10,200) trying to get in through two tiny entrances is a disaster waiting to happen. Luckily, nothing bad happened, but it easily could have. The security was 100% unprepared for this concert, & didn't seem to be doing anything to try to make it better. One of the security guys, who seemed to be assuming the role of leader, was yelling at the crowd through a megaphone to "step back". He must have been blind not to notice that THERE WASN'T ANYWHERE TO STEP BACK!!! I confronted him directly, & told him that I had been to almost 50 Phish shows, & this security was the worst I had experienced. He stared blankly at me, & really didn't seem to care. I hope I never go back to the Rochester War Memorial again.
